Recipe: "King Kong" Smoothie

When we lived in Santa Barbara we used to occasionally have breakfast at a place called the Daily Grind. I loved it because it was a wonderful place to observe the local fauna, had excellent coffee and an absolutely amazing breakfast burrito - something that I had heard of before moving to California but had never expected to sample, let alone develop an affection for. L. became enamoured of one of their protein shakes called the King Kong, with peanut butter and banana. I make a version of it for him from time to time, mostly with peanut butter but sometimes (as a perceived special treat) with Nutella instead. Both options are easy-peasy, delicious and quite filling.

Recipe

Makes 1 large serving

1 cup milk (I use whole, whatever option you like is fine)

2 ripe bananas, chunked and frozen (I keep some in the freezer at all times as they are very useful)

2 Tbsps smooth peanut butter or 1 Tbsp Nutella (the best possible peanut butter please, no supermarket brands full of additives and fillers need apply)

1 Tbsp oat bran (optional but makes the smoothie more filling)

1/8 tsp vanilla

1/4 tsp cinnamon (with the peanut butter version not the Nutella one)

sugar to taste (usually about 1 1/2 tsps, less if using Nutella where you need none or if the bananas are particularly sweet)

Place all ingredients in the blender and puree until smooth. If you find the smoothie too thick, add more milk until you get the desired consistency.

Sprinkle with some more cinnamon and drink while cold.
