This year's spring is decidedly on the cold, wet and grey side. Rather than wait for April showers to turn into May flowers, my mother, L. and I spent a day at the New York Botanical Gardens (one of my favorite places) to see the annual orchid show, hence the attached photo, rather than my usual weekly cartoon. The orchids, while pretty, didn't really move me, I was much more excited by the drifts of daffodils and the alley of lilacs, which showed that - despite the cold and the wet telling us otherwise - nature knows that it is spring.
Spring is also apparent in a wide variety of new veggies which I plan to take full advantage of this week. Snow pea tips, peas in many forms actually, fiddlehead ferns, ramps and garlic chives, asparagus, baby leaves and greens of all kinds, nettles, okra - so many new and exciting green things with which to cook!
